Modaks

So heres another one of my favorite dishes. As i commented earlier this is a sweet dish which is basically well known back home in mumbai. Its called modaks. It basically for religious ceremonies but also serves as quite a treat at home. Pretty easy to make i think as ive seen my mom make them and taste amazing!!!They basically have a lot of jaggery in them that gives them their particular flavour. They have this particular shapes for which we have certain instruments actually but can be basically made in any shape.

What you need:
For the covering:
½ cup Rice Flour
½ cup Water
2 tsp Ghee
A pinch of Salt

For the filling:
1 cup Coconut, shredded
½ cup Jaggery, grated
1 tsp Poppy Seeds, roasted
1 tsp Cardamom Powder
How to proceed:
For the filling:
1) Heat a pan and put jaggery in it
2) When jaggery starts melting, add 1 tsp Ghee and coconut to it
3) Mix well and cook on medium heat for 5-6 mins
4) Add cardamom powder and roasted poppy seeds
5) Filling is ready, keep aside to cool
For the covering:
1) Boil ½ cup water, add ghee to it
2) Add rice flour to boiling water and miz well stirring continuously
3) Add salt, mix well and cook covered for 2-3 mins
4) Remove from heat and knead well into a soft flour when its its hot. This dough is called Ukad and hence the name!

Putting it all together:
1) Divide the dough into small balls
2) Roll each ball to size of puris
3) Place this on the palm and add some filling to it
4) Bring together the ends in form of plates and form a tip and seal
5) Repeat the procedure for rest of the modaks
6) Put these modaks in a steamer/cooker (do not put weight/whistle) and steam for 15-20 mins. The abobe ingredients make 7-8 modaks7) Serve hot modaks with Ghee…
aahh.. they just melt in the mouth.

  1. This looks interesting. At first glance, the first picture looks like a bunch of onions. I like desserts that aren't too rich (for ex. I eat fudge or brownies too much) and these seem like a nice, light dessert

  2. It looks delicious >< They remind me of white chocolate kisses or a particular bread dumpling my family makes. Sadly, I can't try this due to the coconut ingredient. :( Unless... is there a substitute to use for the coconut ingredient or is coconut crucial to the entire recipe?

  3. Come on Rhushi, I'm sure you could have found better pictures than these, they aren't even the right colour.
